Maroon

A Short Story

An heiress, a rebel, and the war between their families, set in an America a thousand years from now.

The debut of Amela Johnson

Maroon, a short story by Amela Johnson. The cover shows a maroon and gold peacock inside a crowned golden birdcage marked with the letter D, in front of a candlelit estate.

The story

“Maroon couldn’t shake a tragic feeling.”

The year is 3016, and America is split in two: the glittering western sectors, and the eastern districts left to starve. For years the Meager War has flared and faded like a fever. Now the rebels are coming up the hill.

Maroon-Alouette DuPont is heir to an oil fortune and to Chatsworth, the estate her family calls Our Little Amelot. All her life she has been told that her name will keep her safe. Then she meets the girl who says she started the war.

Three voices, one war

Maroon is told in three parts, each through different eyes, and each opening with a line of scripture.

Maroon, in a cream blouse and maroon skirt, looks out a tall window over the autumn streets of the city.

Part One

Maroon

Heiress to the DuPont oil fortune, daughter of a French-born physician, and the one person in her family who can’t stop watching the empty streets below.

“I will banish from them the sounds of joy and gladness…”Jeremiah 25:10
Lowles, in a brown military coat, studies a map spread across a desk beside a brass globe and a crimson lion banner.

Part Two

Lowles

Barely older than Maroon, and the rebel who says she started the Meager War. She and her brother survived what the rest of their family didn’t. She hasn’t forgotten who was to blame.

“Woe to those who make unjust laws…”Isaiah 10:1
Tomas, in a black coat embroidered with a gold crowned eagle, stands on a stone balcony above the capital at sunset.

Part Three

Tomas

Lowles’s older brother and the rebellion’s natural leader. Winning a war is one thing. Deciding what comes after it is another.

“Do not say, ‘I will repay evil’; wait for the LORD…”Proverbs 20:22
Amela Johnson, smiling, in a blush satin dress and pearl earrings.

Meet Amela

Amela Johnson decided at fourteen that she would publish a novel. Maroon is the first step.

She is a Division I track athlete, a political science student on the pre-law track, and a lifelong reader of dystopian fiction, history, and the rise and fall of royal houses. She believes each of those gifts came from God on purpose, and she writes the way she runs: all in.
